Tips for coping with the loss of a pet

Everyone reacts differently

There is no right or wrong way to react to the loss of a pet. Do not be embarrassed that you feel sad.

Ask for help

Talk to friends and family about your feelings. If you need additional support, reach out to a trained professional or counselor.

Writing can be therapeutic

Record your feelings in a journal or write a letter to your pet. Focus on the positive, wonderful memories of why you love your pet.

Rituals can be healing

Celebrate the life your pet by holding a funeral or ceremony. Invite those who had a special relationship with your pet. Plant a “memory” tree or plant in your yard to honor your special friend.

Focus on yourself

This can be a stressful time which can be detrimental to your health both physically and emotionally. Eat healthy foods, exercise and get plenty of rest.

Another pet?

Follow your heart and allow it to tell you when the time is right. For some, a new pet comes into their home very soon. For others, they prefer to wait. Whatever you decide, be sure to allow yourself time to grieve.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself.
